What can you see through me?
As a black artist painting black people and their familiar experiences, it really deals with interiority and feels more introspective. Oftentimes, I do say that, to me, painting is a resting place for people to see themselves. Something like looking into themselves through a mirror that shows more of their thoughts. Something beyond the physicality or ordinary outside, it’s intuitive so much so that it almost connects you on a spiritual level. It becomes less of the subject and more of oneself and what one can see and feel together at a moment in time. Just like painting a part of oneself out, they are there to meet your gaze differently, on a wall. It’s extraordinary.
