Fela Kuti painting by Joy Eyitayo Alagbe.

Olufela Olusegun Oludotun Ransome-Kuti Aka Fela Anikulapo Kuti.

Fela Kuti – Nigeria.

Born: October 15,1983, Abeokuta, Western Region (Present-day Ogun State, Nigeria).

Died: August 2, 1997, Lagos, Nigeria.

He is often Hailed as the greatest pioneer of Afrobeat. A West African musical style that blends Yoruba music, Fuji music, Ghanaian highlife, and American Jazz, Soul, and Funk.

” I want to move people to dance, but also to think. Music wants to dictate a better life, against a bad life. When you’re listening to something that depicts having a better life, and you’re not having a better life, it must have an effect on you”.

Fela Kuti

Activism.

Fela Kuti and his band – Koola Lobitos had a strong liking for the ideas and philosophies of numerous Black Power Activists more so members of the Black Panther Party (BPP). Making music with themes of Black struggle as well as Black Pride. Throughout his lifetime, he constantly bemoaned the enormous irreparable damage the European colonial rule of Africa had on the economic and social lives of Africans. Highlighting autocratic and corrupt regimes across the continent. And terming it to be the cause and symptom of poverty and unemployment that results in the widening gap between the rich and the poor. Through His showmanship performance on stage. This has allowed him to communicate the true spirit and identity of Africa to the rest of the world.
