Raracha the outcast!

Society is viewing women as outcasts based on their skin complexion. “Raracha” is a Luo word meaning the ugly one. Society has tried to repress her power setting her as an outcast by deeming her unfit to exist among fellow fair women because of her dark skin. She does not look like other women and neither does she apologize for it. Instead, she rebels against society by adorning herself with a golden crown and wearing the best fabrics to make her stand out even more. She breathes fire over her critics and shines beside the pain of rejection by the very people that should love and nurture her. Hence, the light within her is too powerful. As a result, forcing the world to stop and stare.

Achieng Owira

Dark skin women shouldn’t be set as an outcast. The change towards black female complexion starts with us. Parents should make known to their dark skin daughters the beauty and history of their heritage. Due to the inadequate representation, we should take it as an opportunity, in turn, to open up important conversations with our dark skin women who are our wives, daughters, young sister, and nieces.
