Artist Statement.
Damilare Jamiu is an emerging and young Nigerian visual artist whose work draws inspiration from his immediate society, events, people, and ideas in the contemporary setting of the black movement. His work instills optimism and positive vibes, primarily working with oil and acrylic paints, adding designs and patterns with his style of reminding the public of the black heritage, and embracing the black culture by introducing antique materials and ideas into his works. On the same strength, as an up-and-coming artist of Africa’s contemporary art scene. He has been working on diverse ideas and interesting styles to represent elements of the black’s current socio-politico climate. As he sees art beyond a democratic medium that allows one to disengage from a socio-political power dynamic. He supposes there’s a sort of importance in representing people who have been someway helpless, depressed, mentally stressed, or marginalized.
Damilare Jamiu’s lifestyle enlivens the reality of his works, as it also embodies it. He believes in his perspectives on matters and points of view. Apparently to convey a definite meaning and message to the benefit of those around him. He has been working fervently over the years and evolving through his style to a level in which, by any glance of opportunity, would be showcasing his art for the benefit of the black heritage, and pride, and for the world to experience.
Artist Biography.
I grew up on Lagos Island, Nigeria, and my studio resides there as well. Learned art as an apprentice under Mr. Muyiwa Williams at Artitude Studio, Mushin, after many years of self-development and a discovered talent right from my childhood by my parent. I graduated with studying Arabic Language (History major) from the University of Ilorin, in 2021. These two environments (Lagos and Ilorin) have concocted every condiment that has made up my selective perception and understanding today. Two of my great passions in life are travel and art. Through my art, I seek to document my personal experience, and opinion and stand in time. To capture scenes, happenings, ideas, and events as I see them, and to share with others the beauty and diversity of the world I’ve seen.
Painting is the safe harbor that offers me a place to meditate on the beauty of the world and humanity. And the grace I feel while experiencing them together. My highest goal is to convey that same peace and grace to the viewer. Offering a moment or pause & a feeling of deeper belonging.
