Head wrap.

Head wraps seem to be trending in the world of fashion but the history behind it goes from being runaway shoots. Back to precolonial Africa, during the Transatlantic Slave Trade. One of the few cultural pieces Africans were able to drag to the Americans was head wraps. But later it was used as a tool of oppression and servitude. White masters forced African women and men to wear them as a symbol of their enslavement. The wonderful cultural symbol was watered down to nothing more than a badge of shame. But even though head wraps were an object of oppression from one vantage point, they also served as a vehicle of empowerment and mementos of freedom for the slave community.
